No standard treatment or therapy available.
“Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD), caused by gestational ethanol (EtOH) exposure, is one of the most common causes of non-heritable and life-long mental disability worldwide, with no standard treatment or therapy available.”
No standard treatment or therapy available. Let that sink in. Consider the implications for the individual in need.
Now, ponder what that means for the parent advocating for their child. I promise you, it’s infinitely more terrifying than you can imagine unless you are also a caregiver for a person with an FASD.
Barriers are everywhere. For the doctors who want to treat, teachers who want to enlighten, law enforcement who want to protect, families and communities wanting to thrive. Too many unable due to lack of proper training and resources.
No standard treatment or therapy. This means we are left to flounder in despair. We must spend time, sleep, money, personal health, broken relationships searching for those teeny tiny needles of hope in the ginormous haystacks of complications.
Everyone affected by FASDs are impacted differently. Yet we have proven strategies and research supporting the potential for success if only… if only we could access it.
This isn’t a pity party. It’s a battle cry.
We must do better.
NOW.
